The Human Algorithm: The Liberal Arts and the Age of Artificial Intelligence

This program, open to all Phi Beta Kappa members, will feature TED Talk-style presentations followed by a moderated conversation and audience Q&A. The program will examine the opportunities, challenges, and societal impact of artificial intelligence through the lens of the liberal arts and sciences.

Featured Speakers:

  • Alfred Spector — Distinguished computer scientist and academic leader whose work spans industry and higher education, with a focus on innovation and institutional leadership.

  • Alondra Nelson — Renowned scholar of science, technology, and social equity, investigating how knowledge institutions shape governance and societal trust.

  • Ken Ono — Eminent mathematician whose research bridges pure mathematics, computational methods, and artificial intelligence.

  • Joanna Brooks (Moderator) — Humanities scholar and cultural commentator, examining the ethical, civic, and democratic dimensions of technological change.

7:00–8:00 PM | Private Reception

An invitation-only cocktail reception on the museum rooftop overlooking Balboa Park, offering the opportunity for continued conversation and reflection.

This gathering will bring together Phi Beta Kappa members, academic leaders, innovators, and friends of the Society for a day of thoughtful dialogue and connection. We anticipate a dynamic exchange of ideas at the intersection of higher education, technology, public policy, and civic life.
